Keeping up with Heather
Hello Friends,
I hope that this newsletter finds you well and healthy
and enjoying the start of September. A beautiful warm spring
is brightening moods in Australia, and the return of kids to school
is brightening moods in Canada.
September is always a big month in the fitness industry.
This is not only because kids head back to school and moms and dads
can commit to a fitness schedule again, but also because September
heralds the last third of the year, and thus is a great time to
revisit your goals for the year and recommit to your health, personal
growth, and community wellness initiatives. If you made some goals
for 2007, now is a great time to review your intentions, and perhaps
set some new strategies in motion for this last third of 2007.
A simple strategy is to look back to any goals that
you might have set (perhaps in January?) and sit down and ask yourself
a few questions:
Is this goal still important to me in my life now?
Do I feel that I have made progress in this area?
If not, why not? Is it an unrealistic goal? Or, do I
need to create better strategies to reach it?
Have I discovered some obstacles or resistance to
reaching this goal? If so, how can I overcome any obstacles?
What actions can I take over the next 4-12 weeks
to reach this goal?
Charting out your ideas, strategies, goals, and intentions
is a most important step in reaching your goals. But, after
the reflecting and intending and planning, it's time for action.
So, put your running shoes at the end of the bed, stock your fridge
with healthy foods, and create an environment that encourages your
goal-oriented behaviours and makes any sabotage a little harder.
For instance, if there is fruit readily available but ice cream
is a trip to the shops away, you are more likely to eat the fruit
instead of the ice cream! And, keep a daily or weekly journal
that uses the above steps to track your progress and maintain an
awareness of the journey to success.
If you have any questions, concerns, or success strategies
to share, write in and share! Until then, I am (as always)
wishing you all the best in all your wellness endeavours.
Namaste,
Heather

Thoughts On...Action
Ambition by itself never gets
anywhere until it forms a partnership with hard work. ~James Garfield
Success is sweet, but it usually
has the scent of sweat about it. ~anon
No one keeps up his enthusiasm
automatically. Enthusiasm
must be nourished with new actions, new aspirations, new efforts
and new vision. It is one’s own fault if his enthusiasm is gone,
he has failed to feed it. ~Papyrus
Bits and Bites:
108 Challenge & Yoga
Expo
At sunrise on October 10 Yogins across Australia will
be flowing through 108 Sun Salutations to support the Yoga Aid Challenge
to support children in need. Organize or support your own
108 at your local studio, workplace, gym or at home and you could
even win a trip to India. www.yogaaid.com
This charity cause is supported by the upcoming Yoga
Expo to take place Sunday October 14 in Sydney. Take part
in Yoga classes and workshops with some of Australia's most
popular teachers, and enjoy some great Yoga shopping. For
more info visit www.yogaexpo.com.au
Vegetarian Food Fair
Torontonians can enjoy the Yoga of eating at the upcoming
Vegetarian Food Fair. Presented by the Toronto Vegetarian Association,
this event runs from Sep 7-9 at Harbourfront Centre, and will feature
television personalities, authors, and even a few vegan superstar
athletes. There will be demonstrations of new products, vegetarian
cooking ideas, and lots and lots of goodies to sample.
Their mission: To inspire people to choose a healthier, greener,
more peaceful lifestyle. Sounds like a great way to spend
a day! For more info visit www.veg.ca/foodfair
The 11th Hour
There is a lot of buzz about Leonardo DiCaprios new
film "The 11th Hour". It is said that it makes Al Gore's recent
film "An Incovenient Truth" seem tame in comparison, as DiCaprio
explores climate change and the human factors that have influenced
(and can continue to influence) our natural world.
The Golden Compass
After recently reading Phillip Pullman's fantasy trilogy
- The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass - I was
thrilled to see that the first book has been made into a major motion
picture starring Nicole Kidman among others. In the wake of
Harry Potter, this trilogy is a magical journey for kids and adults
alike that should not be missed. And, with a major film debuting
in December, I'm sure the shelves will be well stocked with these
fantastic books!
Recipes - Vegan Chocolate
Pudding
1 cup
300ml
sugar
½ cup
125ml
unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tbsp
45 ml cornstarch
2 ½ cups 625ml soy
milk
¼ cup
50 ml
soy butter or margarine
2 tsp
10ml
vanilla extract
Over medium-low heat mix together the sugar, cocoa powder
and the cornstarch in a saucepan. Add just enough soy milk to make
a thick paste, then add the remaining soy milk and stir until the
mixture thickens and gets bubbly.
Reduce the heat to low and cook for another minute or two,
then remove from heat and stir in the soy butter and vanilla. Pour into a bowl or serving dishes
and chill thoroughly before serving. Note: To prevent a skin
from forming on top of your puddings, cover the surface with plastic
wrap.
Makes 6-8 very sweet servings.
Adapted from the recipe "Seemingly Normal Chocolate
Pudding" from the highly recommended book The Clueless Vegetarian
by Evelyn Raab.
